How To Use a Crock-Pot

Crocks are small - 1.5 quarts each
I bought this as a gift for my mom who hosts holiday dinners at her house. She really wanted one of these crock pots to use as a buffet server and to also to keep food warm between courses.

She was excited to receive the Crock-Pot but once she opened the package she realized that the 1.5 quart crock size is pretty small and would only hold about 4 servings per crock pot. To visualize this - picture a quart of soup you get from a Chinese restaurant and that is about how much these crocks will hold.

Despite the small size the build quality seems rugged and durable. The unit fits nicely on a counter top and isn't too cumbersome. There is a nice feature to allow each crock pot to be set individually (settings are: off, low, high, warm) while being on a single outlet - rather than having to plug in three individual crock pots.

This would be great for small dinners, soups or perhaps for a Mexican night with different nacho cheese dips in each crock...

Great gift for my mom
I got this as a gift for my mother, and she loves it. She uses it all the time with no complaints. I was nervous about the size, but she said it really works great for a lot of things. I was very pleased with the product, and it's been quite a while now and it's still working just like it did when it arrived.
crockpot trio
Yes, these are small-sized crockpots, but they are ideal if you are cooking for one, and don't need the larger serving sized crockpots

Great for chili, soups, etc...
This is a great value and enduring product. I've had my Rival crock pot for over 10 years, and have used it literally HUNDREDS of times. This is another one of those very low cost but high value kitchen tools.

The low setting allows for slow (12 hour+) cooking overnight or all day. I love to put on a pot of chili before I go to bed or work, and let the house soak up the aroma!

Just be careful with the countertop placement, as the sides get very hot!

Ideal for 5 to 6 People Rival's 6 Quart Round CrockPot/Slow Cooker for the busy familyIdeal for a large family or a dinner party, this round CrockPot from Rival is cleanly designed and simple to operate. One dial turns to three heat settings, low, high, and keep warm for serving, and a red light indicates the power is on. The heavy stoneware crock lifts out of the heating base for easy cleaning thanks to a stick-resistant coating, and is attractive enough to serve from right at the table. While the crock is safe for use in the microwave and dishwasher, it is not intended for use on a stovetop or under a broiler. With two cook settings, low and high, the pot can slow cook a wide variety of stews, roasts, and soups, recipes for which are in...

We're a Rival Family
When I was looking for a crockpot, I wanted something affordable and durable. My Mom had a Rival crock pot when I was younger (it was orange and older than the hills). My Dad also has an older version of this one, only it has a plastic lid. After 10 years, the lid broken, but it still works.

I got this one and love it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that are available with some of the more costly models, nor does it have a design. It is just a nice crock pot that is big enough for a small roast or a pot of chili (which is great on a winter's day)
Bad Crock
I have a thirty year old Rival Crock Pot that still has not one crack in it. Therefore, I was shocked when I used this large beautiful piece of cookware for the first time and it cracked. Multiple cracks after the very first use. It wasn't an expensive purchase but a very disappointing one. Was it bad luck... I have no clue. I'd love for Rival to exchange my cracked crock for a new one so I could find out and I'd be happy to say, it was just bad luck.

Great for parties
What a wonderful idea, for a food warmer. When I stumbled across this, I wondered why no one had thought of it before. Great for cocktail parties or family get togethers where you want to have multiple hot dishes or dips in an easy to use single appliance. Since each crock holds only one quart, it is rather limiting for dinner side dishes such as green beans, or soups, etc. But it is perfect for dips and hors d'ouerves such as nacho cheese dip, bbq meatballs, spinach dip, etc.

Features include a separate on/off "warming" heat control for each crock, which makes it handy for choosing to either heat a crock or to use it for something cold. When I used it, I pre-heated my dips in a microwave and used the triple dipper as a "holding tank" warmer. And there is no problem with cold crocks next to "warmed" crocks since the heating elements are isolated to the crock's insert surfaces.

Another very handy feature is that this has a built in lazy susan, allowing users to...

Wish the warming pots were bigger

A Big Crock
Pros:
Quick to heat (1 hour from cold)
Convenient station for party
Nice sized crocks (1 bag of lil'smokies, etc)
Rotates in place

Cons:
Very large, won't fit in any standard cupboards
Too hot, in 2 hours water was up to 180F.

Bottom Line:
If you entertain small groups with hot dips and foods frequently, this might be worth while. However, I find it awkward to store, and despite warnings that you shouldn't cook your food in the crocks, it heats water near to boiling (too hot for most dips). It is definitely hot enough to cook your food, and it only has one setting "warm".

I would rather use a couple small crocks that will fit in cupboards, and if I leave the house with it, I would try to limit it to one crock anyway, so 3 is a little overkill.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

It is NOT really programmable
I finally decided to buy a slow cooker today, and decided to just get one at a local store instead of waiting for a delivery. This was the nicest looking one at the store, and without examining the box closely, it IMPLIED that it is programmable.

But it is not what I would call "programmable". You can select from only 4 settings:
- High for 4 hours
- High for 6 hours
- Low for 8 hours
- Low for 10 hours

That doesn't do me much good when I need to cook a recipe on Low for 4 hours. I will have to be home at the end of the four hours to manually turn it off or switch to warm.

I wish I had discovered this before I put food in it. I would've taken it right back to the store, and ordered a REAL programmable slow cooker from Amazon. Now I'm stuck with it. :-(

The Crock-Pot Smart-Pot Slow Cooker does the thinking so you don't have to. Simply set the cooking time on " High" for 4 or 6 hours or on " Low" for 8 or 10 hours and go about your day. and, there's no need to worry when you're running a few minutes late. After the pre-selected cooking time is complete, your Crock-Pot Smart-Pot Slow Cooker will automatically shift to the " Warm" setting, preserving the flavor of your meal and ensuring your meal is ready to enjoy when you are. Also included is a 80+ page cookbook with some of our most popular slow cooking recipes.Serving your dish is effortless. Easy simple to use Crock Pot.
I looked all over to replace my old crock pot which, was this model. I read all the reviews. Looked at all the jazzy expensive upggraded newer models. In the end , I came back to this one.
It is well priced, easy to use, big enough to make large crocks of soup, stews, whatever. What is most invauluable to me though, is the automatic warming feature.
I can not tell you how many times I have gone to bed with chicken or a pot roast in the pot only to wake up to a dried up mess I have to throw out.
In my opinion I not not feel the warming feature is too hot. It has been a life saver for me and my food has always turned out well. I do tend to use alot of vegatbale or chicken stock when cooking meats so, maybe that is why the warming feature is not too hot for me. My meats stay tender even as I sleep through the night. The next day I just drain excess liquid off. I love this Crockpot and this is my second one. I also have bought this model as gifts. They ate well received.

Great Product
I bought the two pack for my husband and I. I must say this lunch warmer heats food quite evenly, much better than a microwave. We keep stash of healthy leftovers in 2 cup round glass containers in the freezer to grab and go. These work beautifully with the lunch warmer. The night before, we choose lunch for the next day, put it in the frig to partially thaw and our lunch is ready to plop into the crock pot warmer once we get to work the next morning. No spills on the way to work as it is partially frozen, and the 2 cup amount is below the max fill line on the metal insert. I've read complaints about the cord length (3 ft), but any longer would make it awkward for those who want to wind and carry. Liked this product so much, I bought 7 of them as gifts, all greatly appreciated. Enjoy

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Pretty good after 1 day
Pretty good slow cooker. Like the digital but it seems like the "keep warm" setting is too hot. The liquid in the pot boils a little bit on that setting...is that normal? I would like to see this slow cooker go a little slower. People complain about the lid not sealing well. IT'S NOT A PRESSURE COOKER! I've never seen my mom use a slow cooker with an air tight seal on it. Got mine at Costco, don't know what I'm going to do with that little warmer...hmmm, nice paper weight maybe.

Mealtime, on your time. The Crock-Pot Slow Cooker with Countdown Digital Timer. Whether your recipe calls for 30-minutes of quick heat or an all-day, while you're away, cooking session, the Crock-Pot Slow Cooker with Countdown Digital Timer and Little Dipper Warmer has it under control. You can customize your cooking time and temperature by setting the timer anywhere between 30-minutes and 20-hours on the High, Low, or Warm settings. The digital timer counts down the remaining time so you can coordinate side dish preparation and have a complete meal ready when you are. If you're not around when time runs out, this countdown expert will automatically shift to warm, maintaining temperature and flavor. The digital timer will count up the time ...

Runs Hot
I purchased this at Costco and have used it once. My soup was boiling on low after an hour or two and am wondering what it will do if used on high (will it burn stuff?). I'm thinking of returning it and getting a crock pot that will run a little cooler, since the whole point of having a slow cooker is to have food cook slowly.
Terrible!
I have used this crock pot a few times, and each time it cooks the food several hours faster than it should. Runs very hot! Food comes out tough and overcooked. I definitely do not recommend this and will be throwing mine away. Waste of money and wasted food!

Great Crock-Pot
I have been through 2 crock-pots after purchasing my first one. The lids never quite fit properly and the meat was not tender. I thought I would never find one that worked like my first one. I have been searching for a long time. Everything I have ever purchased from Amazon has been great. So I decided to try the Crock-Pot SCR500B and I am very pleased. Amazon you have done it again. Marvelous Machine!
I have never been one to use slow-cookers; in fact, I've never owned one before. In addition to the fact that my appetite doesn't have the patience, there is something about the idea of letting a pot cook a meal for you that annoys the cook in me. And when Amazon offered me the iStir Crock-Pot, with an automatic stirring attachment, I thought, well don't I get to do anything? However, as the price was right, I figured why not.

First of all, the cooker is sturdy and clearly well-made, assuaging any reservations I may have had concerning the safety of leaving it on for hours by itself. I liked the fact that it comes with two different stir attachments, one for stew and one for other types of food, and that the pot can be used without the stirring attachment at all, should you prefer to stir the food yourself.

To test it out, I decided to try one of my favorite dishes, Italian Sausage & Peppers. After washing the pot and cover in warm soapy water, I prepared my...

Super improvement over the standard pot!
My 2 previous pots have been original Crock-Pots so I was thrilled to be able to stick with what I consider to be the best brand.
This is a nice large deep pot with plenty of room for a whole dinner. It is very heavy so if you want something light weight then this won't make you happy but I like the heavier weight because I feel that the thickness of the glass pot makes for a more even temperature and I appreciate the fact that it doesn't feel like something that will tip over easily while it's in use.
The controls are very easy to figure out and the explanations in the enclosed flyer make it simple to understand.
The stirrer functuntion is an add on that is enclosed - you don't have to use the stirring mechanism with every meal but when you want it it's there. I especially liked the digital controls and the ability to have the machine pause when It's opened.
The lid has a nice attached rubber seal and has clips that easily lock the top down - a really nice feature...
Cooks great, but has some flaws
I was in desperate need of a new crock-pot when Vine offered this one. My previous one had been damaged moving and had to be tossed. This Crock-Pot is much nicer looking and a much better quality than my old one. I was especially excited to try the new iStir feature.

The first thing I made in this Crock-Pot was Kung Pao Chicken. This particular recipe called for cooking the chicken three hours, then removing and cubing the chicken. Then you added the chicken back into the Crock-Pot with the sauce and chopped peppers/onions to simmer for another 30 minutes. I used the regular top to cook the chicken and then switched it out for the iStir top. Since the iStir top shuts down after 5 minutes and doesn't restart for another 30 minutes, I had to keep going in and pressing the power button to stir my mixture. This was a little bit of a pain. I wish it had the option to continuous stir for recipes like this.

Another issue I had was that it made my counter REALLY hot. Hot...

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Great for making oatmeal
I use this little crockpot to make steel-cut oatmeal for a healthy breakfast, and it works just great! The temperature is fine and I haven't had an issue with overcooked oatmeal.

Another reviewer noted one of the frustrating things about this little slow cooker, and that's that the insert isn't removable, as it is on some big crock pots. That makes cleaning frustrating. I've found a good solution to that - I add a little bit of water to the pot and then insert a large ramekin into the basin. The lid still fits just fine, to keep too much water from evaporating. It turns it into kind of a "double boiler" setup, which buffers the heat and gives me an easily removable bowl of oatmeal in the morning. For a while, I was eating right out of the crock pot, but this solution is much better. Any crusty oatmeal can then just get washed out in the dishwasher and I rarely have to worry about cleaning the small crockpot itself.

I love this little appliance - I don't...

  • Ideal for dips
  • Perfect for parties and more

Make the pot removeable!
The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is the fact that you can NOT take out the pot.

You also cannot immerse this in water, so cleaning is a giant pain.

That said, it's GREAT for dips that need to be kept warm, such as my famous 'chile con queso'. Just put everything together and plug it in.

A few hours before a party, cut a 4" block of Velveeta into 1" cubes, put in the Lil' Dipper. Add a few tablespoons of medium Pace Picante. Add 1/3 of a small can of chopped green chiles.

For more spice, dribble in the juice from a jar of jalapenos.

To thin it out, you can add cream, half and half, or milk. Or even water (but that will dull the taste).

Serve with your favorite torilla chips.

You can also make this in the microwave if you need to make something 'in a hurry'.

I wouldn't recommend putting this on a dining table, as you'd need an extension cord, and kids could trip over it and burn themselves...
Convenient and Stylish
Great for fondue- heat coming from the bottom and sides of the crock does a better job of keeping dips warm than a pot with the heat source on the bottom only. Compact so that it doesn't take up too much space on the table. Needs a few minutes to warm up and you might need an extension cord in order to have it on the table.

The removable crock is easy to clean (you'd think it had a non-stick surface!), and with two settings, it couldn't be simpler to use. The oval shape makes it better suited for cuts of meat than a round one would be. This size is just about right for a small chicken or a 2-3 lb roast. Try this for an easy dinner: brown a 2-3 lb pork roast. Throw it into the crock pot and pour a jar of salsa over the roast. Put the lid on, set the crock pot to Low, and leave it alone for 8 hours. Serve the tender pork with potatoes and green beans for the perfect comfort-food meal, or scoop it into tortillas or onto sandwich rolls for a quick and hearty lunch.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Well made, Good price, Large
This 6 Quart pot is for a large family. A crock pot must be filled at least half way because the heating element runs half way up around the side wall and not the bottom. This produces the best cooking of a crock pot. The lid has a rubber gasket that keeps the heat in and starts the simmer cooking process faster. The lid clamps are for transport and not cooking. I use mine for chili and it works great but produces a lot of leftovers. If you don't have a large family I suggest a smaller pot.
I also own a Hamilton Beach 5 Quart Crock Pot and it doesn't compare by a mile to this Crock Pot. This one is so much better constructed than the Hamilton Beach, it has rubber non skid pads, uses actual nuts and bolts assembly, larger carry handles, and the crock pot fits tighter in the base. If you plan on making large meals this is the right pick.

Cook it, lock it and go. The Crock-Pot Cook & Carry Slow Cooker is designed for portability by helping to prevent spills during transport. A secure locking lid and rubber gasket create a seal to keeps food in, even over bumps and turns in the road. You arrive relaxed, without worry or mess. The Crock-Pot Cook & Carry Slow Cooker is convenient for potlucks, family gatherings, tailgating, parties and more just about anytime you need to transport food prepared at home. Features manual dial with HIGH and LOW cook settings and WARM setting to keep food at ideal temperature. Removable stoneware conveniently doubles as a serving dish. Dishwasher-safe stoneware and glass lid make clean up quick and easy. 6 quart capacity.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Nice Size for One Person
This crockpot was just what I was looking for in the small size. I am a single person and I have made a small pork loin roast with sauerkraut, and a beef stew with veggies, etc. Both turned out wonderful, and allowed me to have left overs for another dinner. The only thing is that I wish the top had a snugger fit and the crockery itself was a little more oblong (it's basically round). But I really think it meets my needs perfectly. One caution...even on low it cooks very hot.

Feed your family nutritious, home-cooked meals easily and with style. The 2-1/2-quart pattern slow cooker serves approximately 3-4 people and provides high and low cook settings. Clean up is also a snap with dishwasher-safe removable stoneware that doubles as a convenient serving dish complete with glass lid.

  • 2-1/2-quart capacity
  • Removable round stoneware
  • Dishwasher-safe stoneware
  • Recipes included
  • Dishwasher-safe glass lid
  • 2.5 quart capacity

perfect for two
Love my Crock-Pots! This one is just the right size for two-three people. The kitchen doesn't get hot, the electric bill doesn't go up and dinner is ready.
Fabulous invention.
Average with poorly fitting lid
This item is a round, not oval as it appears in the picture, 2.5 qt crock pot with removable insert. On first plugging it in the heating elements gave a fairly strong burn smell. According to the included booklet, this will disappear in time and is not dangerous or even unusual.
It has two settings, low and high, like all or most basic slow cookers. So far, so good.
My problem with the unit is the poorly fitting lid. It does not sit flat on the insert. It wobbles and has gaps around the rim, where heat and moisture can escape during cooking, instead of sitting flat on the pot like a lid normally does.
Granted, the pot was not an expensive item but I expect better quality/workmanship from the company that invented slow cookers, other than that it works but seems to cook a little hot, even on the low setting.

Loving this little warmer
UPDATE (7/25/12): One of the commenters posted a link where you can buy extra food containers for $5 off the crockpot website. Sweet!

Pros:
* It looks cool. It made a couple of my co-workers "ooh" and "aah".
* It is compact, light, and easy to carry.
* It warms food great as long as you remember to plug it in! On average, it warmed my food to comfortable eating temperature within 1

How To Use a Crock-Pot

A good crock pot with serious design flaws
So I've owned this for about two months now and I've used it about five times. All in all, this is a good slow cooker - it seems to be built well, the cooking temperature doesn't seem too high, and at the end of the day, it works. So, a solid three stars for that.

However, there are a few major flaws in the design that make me question the competence of the designers who worked on this model. Things that would seem like a no-brainer to anyone who's ever cooked anything, but somehow, not the case here.

For example, the timer control has four AND ONLY FOUR settings, so it is not truly programmable. High for 4 hours, High for 6 hours, Low for 8 hours, and Low for 10 hours. Want to cook on high for six hours? Too bad. Want to cook on low for four hours? Tough. Now, of course, you can manually keep returning to the crock pot to adjust these times - there's nothing to stop you from coming back after four hours on high and adding another two hours, but if you wanted to...

Does not cook too hot. Nice features; I like the locking lid, sturdy handles & the stoneware crock...
I haven't had the opportunity to use this crock-pot other than testing the temperature. Unfortunately, today's crock-pots cook hotter than the first ones. Because I've read many complaints of some crock-pots cooking too hot, I tested this one with room temperature water. After 4 hours on the High setting, the water was boiling & the temp was approx. 208 degrees. I tested it on the Low setting next, after 4 hours the temperature reached 190 degrees. Today's crock-pots are set to cook up to 300 degrees on High, and 200 degrees on Low. So far, this one seems to cook as expected.

I had to wiggle the lid around to be sure to get a seal. I didn't want any steam/heat to escape. By the way, did you know you shouldn't lift a crock-pot's lid very often? Doing so will reduce the temperature & it will take approx. 20 minutes for the temperature to come back up. This crock-pot has a very nice feature, you can test the temperature of the food through a gasket on the lid. The gasket is...
Finally some new features in a crockpot!
I have been a fan of crock-pots for so long. They are a favorite way for me to cook. This travel serve 6-quart cooker solved one of my biggest complaints about crock-pots. Finally a locking lid. One time I was bringing a crock-pot dinner to a pot luck at work. While I did pack the crock-pot carefully, placed it in a padded laundry basket, the basket tipped over, and I had a dinner soak my trunk. Let's just say you have to have a lot of cleaning supplies to clean up after a large crock-pot.
I love the that you can program the cooking times, this is very helpful if you work. I find that I am really gone 10 to 11 hours a day, and its really tough for a dish not to dry out if you can't reduce the cooking temperature. So this is a really nice feature too! The handles to help you carry a hot crock-pot are also a really nice touch. I like that these handles aren't solid so you don't have to fully grip right next to the hot crock-pot.
Looking for a crock-pot that has some...

Works Fine For Current 6-Quart CrockPot Brand Slow Cooker
I understand some people's reservations about this product, but I was careful about what I bought and if you are too you won't have a problem. I chose to buy the current 6-quart model (with the hinged lid and digital timer) of the CrockPot brand slow cooker because this is a CrockPot brand bag. I figured the bag would most likely conform best to CrockPot brand products.

I can't comment on other brands, but the 6-quart model is a perfect fit for this bag. I don't know if CrockPot sells a 7-quart model, but the 6-quart is PLENTY big. I don't think the CrockPot brand can be responsible for the fit of other brand slow cookers.

On a separate note, the photo is a little misleading, but on the positive side. It looks like there's just one long shoulder strap, but there are actually 2 shorter straps that gather above the bag, which to me seems like it would allow for more even handling during transport. There's also a strap inside to secure the lid and the the bag itself...

fits Rival, not Hamilton Beach
This crock-pot cover was shown to be sold with the Hamilton Beach 7 qt crockpot. I own both brands. It does not fit on the Hamilton Beach due to the handles not allowing the zipper to close. It is awesome on the Rival, and keeps the lid in place and food was hot an hour later at a church brunch. Well worth my investment.
Have food, will travel!
I bought this travel bag to replace one my dogs had chewed up. This bag does what the old one did--keeps food nice and hot for hours, that is, even with the crock pot turned off. But there have been some improvements: a nice long strap to sling over your shoulder and an inside strap that cleverly slips through not only the side handles of the crock pot but also through the lid handle, and snugs up with velcro to minimize sloshing food on the inside of the bag.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

I love my Crock Pot, but with a caveat
I bought one of these Crock Pots locally about a month ago. I brought it home and washed the stoneware insert thoroughly, and then made a pot roast with vegetables. It made the house smell great during cooking, and my family commented on how tender the meat was. Unfortunately, everyone noticed a slight "plastic" taste to the food. I was surprised and disappointed since I made sure to thoroughly wash the insert in hot water. I chalked it up to the fact that I was using it for the first time. Well, after six separate meals with thorough washing in between, each and every meal has had this plastic taste to it, no matter what I made. I have to assume that the black paint on the stoneware insert is somehow leeching into the food. I contacted Crock Pot at their website and sent them a message describing my dilemma and they responded by apologizing and offering to send me a new unit, free of charge. Now that is what I call customer service! I haven't received the new unit yet but when I do I...

Slow cooker
Though Crock pot is programmable there is only 4 options for time 2,4,6,or 8 hrs. You cannot program for odd number hours and cannot program the High or low settings. If time is short then cooker is on High setting and if 6 or 8 hrs are picked then cooker is on Low. Also does not seem to go to warm automatically which was a nice option in my previous cooker. Lid is attach well and does not leak during transport as it has a rubber gasket.
Amazing Customer Service
Wow. I will totally support this company. My old crock pot lost one of the black "feet" and it wobbled. I called for a replacement foot. They didn't have one so they sent me this model at no cost. I am thrilled and love companies that stand behind their products. Awesome!

Great Slow Cooker, Not Great On The Go
If you're looking for a reliable slow cooker, this one is great. If you want to be able to transport your items without spillage...look elsewhere. As a slow cooker it has everything I need; settings warm, low, and high. I wish I'd done my homework before asking for this for Christmas last year; unfortunately, this thing leaks even when "locked". I didn't find this out until late last year so it's too late to return, but it's still functions very well as a slow cooker.

Semi-slow Cooking
After being "retired" for almost five years, I have realized that I'm still shopping and cooking like I did when I was working, using precooked, semi-fast, and packaged ingredients, and that grocery prices continue to climb. I live in a high desert area with extremes of climate, yet I find that my metabolism is most in balance when I eat consistent amounts of protein, in meals that are warm and savory, all year round. With those elements in mind, I decided to incorporate the use of a Slow Cooker into my meal preparation.

With all the sources of recipes on the internet and in cookbooks, I have discovered that I can spend as much or as little time on the prep as I desire, have easy clean up, and this little cooker will yield 3-4 servings, just enough for our household of two. And I can still spend most of the day in my studio.

Technical Notes:
The outside of the cooker does get hot to the touch, and there is no indicator light to remind you that it...

Simply and Fantastic
This is so basic and wonderful to use. Like a very old one I use to have years ago. Easy to keep clean. For your information, I checked the temperature on all three settings with a restaurant grade instant read thermometer. High is just above 170 degrees, low is about 155 degrees and warm is just slightly above 140 degrees. Food I have prepared so far, taste so good and I am sure it is healthier. So satisfying that you eat less. So have some containers on hand for the fridge. (I only cook for myself most of the time) The cord could be about 2 foot longer. But, a short cord from a Dollar type store took care of that. Set it to cooking in the morning or over night, doesn't matter. The liquid condenses back in to the crock for the most part.
Great for One!
Lovely for this windy spring! More suitable than my old 5-Q size for one. Plus there's a "Warm" button so I don't have to keep my soup or porrige at boiling "Low". Carefully packaged, no damage at all. I love it, if you don't - LOOK AT the PRICE - you should love it. :)

No different than any other crock pot in a GOOD way!
I bought this crock pot a little leary because of some of the reviews on here saying it gets too hot, burns food, etc. I thought for the price it would be easy to return and/or replace if needed. This is not only an excellent price for a large crock pot but it works just as good or better than any slow cooker I've owned, and that includes a Weir programmable slow cooker costing $150! This is it's replacement and after using it 10 times this is what I've found versus the complaints I've read on here:

1) Yes, it's a slow cooker and the base is stainless steel, it conducts heat and does get hot but no hotter than any other stainless steel based slow cooker I've ever owned. It even warns you in the instruction booklet it will get hot and not to touch it while on and to use the handles if you need to move it.

2)I'm not sure what kind or type of slow cookers the complainers have had in the past but yes, there is SIMMERING which is normal for the low setting. If it...

Great!
I was looking for a crockpot that wasn't too large and wasn't too expensive. This product fit the bill.

The lid is treated glass so, you can see the food cooking without lifting the lid. The lid handle stays cool during the cooking, so you won't burn your fingers if you touch it. The ceramic cooker is sturdy and alittle heavy. It can become slippery when wet, so be careful while washing it in the sink. Also be careful because the handles on the cooker and the metal base can become very hot during cooking. So keep potholders nearby.

The cooker can accomodate a 3.5-4 pound whole chicken and 4 pound roasts. It's oval shape enables these foods to fit well. It comes with a small instruction manual that includes some recipes.

So far, I've cooked whole grain cereal (barley and cracked wheat), stews, whole chickens, corned-beef, and turkey legs. They've turned out good. However, since I'm new to slow-cooking, the first attempts were abit off because I cooked...
I don't see what the problem is...
I read a lot of reviews before I bought this and most of them weren't very good. I took a chance and bought it anyway because it was the easiest brand to find in a store. My oven is broken so I needed one of these right away. I don't see what the problem is and actually I love this crock pot. I didn't have any problems with it leaking or with the lid not fitting. The heat seemed appropriate for the setting. Maybe I got lucky? For the price, I think this crock pot is perfect. I wish they made this size programmable. I'm not really sure why they don't. That would be my only complaint but I still give it 5 stars because I got what I bought and I'm very happy with it.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Works well
I've used this crock pot a couple of times now and I have been very pleased with it. I like the warming function when it's done cooking.

Several reviewers claimed that the crock pot runs hot. Something that you have to keep in mind--as is noted in the directions--is that you have to fill the crock pot at least half full. If you don't put enough in the crock pot it will run hotter than normal. The first time I used the pot, I only filled it about 1/4 full and the liquid did boil, as other reviewers have mentioned. Lesson learned; I have an old, 3-quart crock pot that I use if I know the recipe won't fill this pot adequately.

I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

So far, so good!
I've had this a couple months now, and have used it half a dozen times. So far there are no complaints, it's easy to use (which was important - my cooking skills are lacking) and the pot is a good size (not too big when only being used for one or two people). Even better, I can cook extra, and stick it in the fridge for leftovers!

I will say that it cooks a little faster than the times given in the manual. What worked for me was adding additional liquid before I left the house, and making sure the crock-pot was set on one time setting below what was recommended. If I needed to, I could just turn it up when I got back home, but I haven't had to do that yet.

For the price, it's a great buy, and has a lot more features than any other crock-pot I've seen in this price range.

** UPDATE 8/11/2013 **

Had this for more than a year now, and I still love it. I use it pretty regularly and it still works great. The cook time is still a little fast,...
Great deal on a large crockpot.
When my wife told me she was looking at a larger Crockpot at a local drug store and told me the price I said let's look on Amazon. Sure enough we found an even better one for for less money. She used it for the stuffing for Thanksgiving to save oven space which is always at a premium on big family holidays. She is very happy with it and we highly recommend it for anyone needing a large crockpot. The autumn motif is very attractive as well.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Very pleased-- good value for price and works great
Bought this to replace an old metal slow cooker; the crock of course makes all the difference. This unit is well designed, maintains a constant temp, and is easy to clean. Size is good for a family, we've made roasts, soups, dressing, etc. for groups from 4-10 so far .My only concern is the long-term performance of the plastic parts of the lid locking mechanism; they are fine now and may last forever, who knows.

I've never had a slow cooker with a digital display or timer. I'm not sure why you'd want one...in the words of my grandmother, "it's just one more thing to break." The way we use it it's always turned on in the morning before work (on low) and cooks all day. A timer or digital display would make no difference. There are slow cookers for $100+ out there but this Crock-Pot meets my needs quite well.

Your Meal Stays Hot When You Go Out The Crock-Pot SCCPVL600 Cook & Carry Slow Cooker is an easy way to take your slow cooked meal on the road. Terrific Purchase!
This Crock-Pot is very easy to travel with. The locks on both ends seal very tightly. Cooks well and cleans up even better! Looks beautiful all the rest of the time. Shipping time was unbelieveably fast. I would purchase again, great product.
I love this crock pot!
I bought this crock pot to replace one that was dropped. I totally DISAGREE with the reviewers that said the rubber ring has a "horrible" or "awful" smell. That is not true about the crock pot I received. I have never noticed any unpleasant odor on this crock pot. In the instruction booklet it says NOT to clamp down the top WHILE YOU ARE COOKING. I didn't notice any chemical or bad odor when I opened the box either.

This is a very nice, large crock pot. I usually make chili with about 4# of meat and also stews, etc. in it! I absolutely love the red metallic color!! Also the inner crock pot is separate from the outer metal shell which makes it a breeze to clean. The price is very reasonable. I recommend this product highly. It's a nice quality pot and beautiful in appearance.

Great for melting chocolate
I bought this intending to use it for melting chocolate coating for dipping cake pops. I'm pleased to say that it works wonderfully for this purpose. I can melt three different kind of chocolate and it doesn't get too hot, which is important when you are dealing with chocolate coating. The crocks are removable which makes for easy cleanup. The crock pot has only the one setting "warm", which was fine for my purposes. It comes with a carrying bag for portability, which was ideal for me because I used it at the county fair to demo cake pop decorating, and I did not have access to a microwave. It was perfect. It's also very sturdy and well made. I'm certain that I will get a lot of use out of this.

Perfect Perfect Perfect
I HATE to eat hot food that's gone cold. I mean, I really hate it. It makes me gag. It makes me queazy.

I also just finished reading A.J. Jacobs' book "Drop Dead Healthy" -- and 2 of the easiest suggestions to implement (to eat less and get more nutrients out of the food you eat) had to do with eating slower. uUse a smaller fork/spoon/dish, and chew each bite at least 15-20+ times. And, as it turns out -- this really does slow your eating. But slower eating demands being able to keep the food warm longer.

So the choice is either just put little bits of food on my plate at a time and make ump-teen trips to the stove for more (no WAY I am gonna put big serving bowls on my table and let the food go cold for everybody....)

or

visit the microwave over and over and over and over until all that's left of the food is a hard, greasy and shrivled little lump of over-nuked nothingness.

So I set out last weekend to fix the problem...
Fabulous! $15.99 @ Wally world
I LOVE this thing! It only has one cooking level (ON/OFF). It gets food VERY hot, but not boiling. I have used this along with my new crockpot to have complete meals ready when I get home. Each of these little pots holds 2 cups. For me, it is great for making cassaroles with precooked meat, baked beans, side vegetables, stewed tomatoes, sauces for pasta, au gratin potatoes, on and on! I make my main meal in the large crockpot with a liner(love those) and the side dishes in these. These little crocks fit perfectly in the top shelf of the dishwasher. The lids are said not to be dishwasher safe. I don't see why they wouldn't be top shelf OK in the dishwasher, and I plan to try them in it. Right now, it has been no problem to give them a quick wipe.

I chose this over the All Clad Non Stick slow cooker
I spent a year looking for a good slow cooker that (1) When set on low did not boil food too hot (2) Could hold enough for large batch cooking (3) Did not have a hinged lid (hard to clean and breaks easily) (4) Is programmable for a set amount of time, then switches to warm (5) Was reasonably priced. I tried cheapo store brand round slow cookers which nuked my food - no need to explain since most people have had one at one point or another. Last fall I purchased the top of the line All Clad slow cooker with non-stick insert from Williams Sonoma. After sales tax it cost me a little over $300 which made me nervous. The first meal I made in it was braised short ribs. I browned the ribs in the slow cooker insert on the stove and set it on low for several hours. The food was delish and it kept a gentle simmer but I was horrified to find light scratch marks on the inside of the insert as I was washing the dishes. I used the All Clad for several days and then finally returned it...

Finally, a slowcooker that deserves five stars
Let's have a rundown of slowcookers I've owned over the last 10 years:
The All Clad slowcooker was great; however, the computerized panel stopped working altogether AFTER the warranty ran out. The Kitchen Aid slow cooker was way too hot, even on the warm cycle. The Hamilton Beach Set n' Forget Programmable slow cooker cooked everything great; however, it would randomly shut off or stay on cook, making it unreliable.

The new Crockpot SCVT650 is awesome. The touchpad is very 21st Century. It's so easy to program that I'm still astonished with it. It cooks great. Like most programmable slow cooker it goes from low or hot to warm once the meal is completed. You can set the time as low as 30 minutes and as high as 20 hours. The stainless steel exterior is something you can proudly put on your countertop.

The hole in the lid is no big deal. It's purpose is to keep the handle in its proper place. To clean the hole, if it gets gunked up with food, you just...
Love My New Crockpot!
My mother used to make slow cooker dinners for us back in the early 70s. They were awful. I don't know if she had a beta model of the slow cooker, or that no one had yet figured out the science of cooking with crocks, but I was a bit traumatized by the dinners that didn't taste like anything but all tasted the same (sorry mom!). 40 years later, I thought a Crockpot might help me prepare food for my family because chaos always breaks out when dinner preparation starts (i.e. client calls, etc). A friend of mine is an expert cook and she swears by her crock. I decided to give it a shot. I researched models, and decided that this large size, easy to program model was a good fit. I was right. The first dish I made was chili, the second stuffed peppers, the third was navy been, beef brisket, chicken & sausage gumbo, then I moved on to steel cut oatmeal, unstuffed cabbage, and am cooking up a sausage chicken dish as I write this. Each dish has turned out better than the last. Here's the...

BEWARE OF THIS PRODUCT!
What a great price for so many nice features. I bought this product through a membership store awhile ago. In the beginning it worked Great! I was so delighted that I began to use it more and more. Then all of a sudden I raised the lid, after cooking, and ended up holding only the handle in my hand. This type of lid appears to be made by one company as they are all made the same. I needed to use tongs to get the lid off. Once off I looked at the lid and the handle. I discovered that the plastic of the handle which was holding the nut for the crew had actually melted. I pushed the two pieces back together and when cooled it was tight again. I did use the appliance a couple of times with the assistance of tongs. However, one of the side handles was also starting to drop pieces of plastic onto the counter. This machine must really get HOT for it to melt the plastic. It was unsafe to use. I hope this information is helpful.

I have had great luck with my Crock Pot
I have had great luck with my crock pot and no problems with the handles. I also have cookware with the same type of glass cover and handles and it has been trouble free also. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer about the problem? I have found that most companies are receptive to their customers problems. At the very least they listen. If I were you I would call them or write a letter explaining the problem to see if they will to anything for you. It might depend on the age of the crock pot, but it is definitely worth a try. Best of luck!
Crock-Pot SCRP500-SP 5-Quart Smudge Proof Slow Cooker
The crock pot works fine and looks nice. I had hoped that the timer would work differently. As is, you can only choose 4 set settings and the warm setting only works after the other time is finished. It would be nice to be able to use just the warm setting on it's own.

love it!
I bought this at a local store because I fell in love with the pattern. I needed a slow cooker because I am way too busy to cook everyday when I get home every night and so is the boyfriend! We both love this appliance. I feel it getting warm as soon as I turn it on in the morning and everything that I have made has turned out perfectly. I usually use the low setting to cook my food for 8-9 hours and then leave it at warm until we clean up. So far we have made potato soup multiple times, whole turkey breast, chicken and dumplings, and chicken and rice. Love the results and it makes my life so much easier! I would recommend it to anyone who wants a beautiful and convenient appliance.

The SCR450-PT serves 5 or more people and is ideal for all your favorite slow cooker recipes, with high, low and warm settings to accommodate varied cooking needs and time constraints. LOVE this crock pot
I needed a new crock pot since my dogs pulled my other one off the counter and it broke. This one magically came up with a deal I couldn't refuse. I had been looking at a similar one that was red and it would have worked, but this one caught my eye. I love love love the damask design and this model has a warm setting, which my old one didn't. I really can't say anything bad about this crock pot.
I WANTED to love this Crock Pot...
I love the design of this crock pot and was pleased that it is just the size I need. However, I must have recd a lemon? I've been using crock pots since the 70s so I'm comfortable with their function. My first dish (a soup requiring an hour of low simmering if prepared on the stovetop) never approached hot in the four hours it sat on high. I had added nothing frozen -- ingredients were from fridge, broth was room temp. Pot filled between 1/2 and 3/4 full as recommended. I tried a second recipe with similar results.

I checked the Rival website and it states that the contents should reach 209 degrees F and then hold that temp [takes 4-5 hrs on high, something like 8 on low]. I tested my new crock pot by adding tap water to recommended amount and turning it on HIGH. I started checking water temp with thermometer after 4 hrs, and quit after 6.5 hrs -- never getting above 195F. It's as if we were using the "WARM" function rather than HIGH, but both my husband & I checked that...

Better than the $120 ones
I really shopped around when looking at crock pots because they are expensive. I had heard mixed reviews all around about the cooking temps on some of these being too high or too low or some models automatically shutting off before they are done cooking or even in some cases the electronics lock up to the point of having to unplug and leave unplugged for an hour...this doesn't do any of that. We've used it about 15 times since we bought it (often several times a week) and love throwing a whole meal in there in the morning and coming home after work to a prepared meal. This is truly a fix it and forget it crock pot! I will leave 2 comments that reference some other bad reviews on here:

1. This thing stinks - Yes, the first time you use it, it does have a weird plastic type smell that even smells in the air as you cook. This smell will go away literally after the first use. Washing it first won't help. It didn't affect the taste of the food in the least.

Great Crock Pot!
I use a crock pot a minimum of once per week. I have had one for several years that worked, but would get so hot (even on the "keep warm setting") that the liquid would scorch along the sides of the dish. Because it was the only crock pot I had ever owned, I thought that was how they all worked.... I decided to get a new one and was looking for one with the automatic timer that would cook, then switch to "keep warm." I purchased this one, expecting it to cook the same way. After cooking one meal, it was obvious how terrible my previous crock pot was. This one cooks evenly, never scorches, and the casing is surprisingly lightweight! The oval shape also makes it easier for me to store. This might be one of my favorite purchases ever.
Best Slow Cooker
I chose this model partly because it won the editors choice from Wired magazine. It also fit my needs of a nice slow cooker with programmable time and keep warm mode. The price is great too.

Hot Answer from Crock-Pot
I too thought it cooked too hot so wrote to company. The following is their reply:
"Both High and Low stabilize at the same temperature, it is just a matter of how long it takes to reach the simmer point. Once food reaches the simmer point, total cook time is dependent on cut and weight of meat to reach the point of maximum flavor and texture potential. (Most dishes can be prepared on either High or Low.) Typical cook time for Crock-Pot' slow cookers to reach simmer point (209'F):
Low: 7-8 to reach the simmer point
High: 3-4 hours to reach the simmer point"
It is hotter than my old one but it's a food safety issue. The dishes are coming out great. I find it the perfect size for my husband and me and can't beat the price!

3 Qt. Crock Pot
This lovely little gem is a perfect size for 2-4 servings. It has "Off, Low, High and Warm" settings. Many crock pots I read about before purchasing this one do not have the warm setting, which makes keeping your cooked items at the right temperature for your meal without the higher cooking heat that could possibly over-cook your meal if left on too long.

Have already made several meals with the crock pot (turkey carbonate, beef stew and baby back ribs). I noticed when the recipes called for cooking from 7-9 hours on low temperature, it only took 7 hours, so checking your food is important when you first start using a new crock pot.

Would definitely recommend this crock pot.
Liking It
I've had a Rival brand Crock Pot for years and decided I needed another one so that I could keep more than one dinner item warm for when company comes. I choose the Crock Pot brand because my first one has served me well although the new Crock Pot does not say Rival on it anywhere so I guess they've sold the name. I saw this one and it had the keep warm setting and the price was so affordable I decided to try it and I'm very happy I did. The shape is lower and wider than my old one and the lid is glass as apposed to the plastic lid on the old one. I admit the new ones lid does not fit tightly (see update below). I really love the handles - they are open in the middle and easy to grip. And I can wrap the cord around and tuck the plug end into one of the handles for neat storing. Also love the stainless finish, it's very sleek and attractive. Update - the crock has small bumps around the top perimeter that hold the lid up off the rim a bit (like a couple of millimeters). This...
