How To Use a Classic Crock-pot the Original Slow Cooker 5 Qt. SCR509B-A Black

Classic Crock-pot the Original Slow Cooker 5 Qt. SCR509B-A Black

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Too hot for all day cooking
I've used this slow cooker twice while I was at work and contacted the company because the food was bubbling fiercely and caked to the sides after cooking on low all day. They told me that the low and high settings use the same temperature, but the high setting gets there faster. The appliance is beautiful and the quality seems to be very high, but if I can't cook a meal while I'm at work, then I have no use for it. This one's going to Goodwill.

  • Convenient Warm Setting
  • Removable Stoneware
  • Dishwasher Safe Stoneware and Lid
  • Recipes Included
  • Uses Less Energy than Conventional Oven

Good basic slow cooker
This is almost exactly like the silver one on here that has some bad reviews, so I will keep this brief. I have this slow cooker and also a Hamilton Beach. I use both a lot and they are a few years old, so they don't have the locking lids to carry them or anything too fancy beyond the warm, low, high settings.

Mine has a glass lid, and it does sputter sometimes while cooking and also sometimes gets the counter a little wet, but very minimally. I have noticed that this gets hotter than my other one, so if I am home and want things done in 4-6 hours instead of being gone 8-10 hours, I use this one. Even on low, this gets things done quicker. I have never had things burn while I'm gone, but I always have it on low for overnight or for when we're gone all day.

I also have this round one and an oval. I do prefer the round one, and this size is great for feeding a large family or group. I make 6 pound roasts in it often for BBQ sandwiches or pork taco meat or...
Too hot
Put a beautiful roast in to SLOW cook. Got to hot. Came back to a dry tough piece of meat

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Great Crockpot
I received this for my bridal shower. I'd registered for the SCRC500-W but apparently, it's no longer available and this model has replaced it. I am most certainly very happy with this product. I made one of my recipes I usually cook on low on the stove top. I prepared it the night before and then in the morning, put it all into the crock pot and set it on low for 10 hours. When I got home, it was perfect. This is the first time I'd ever used a crock pot and I was very happy with the results. I very much love how once it finishes the cooking time, it will kick down to warm. It is a nice even heat that worked so well to make my dish so tender. The crock was extremely easy to clean when I was done. I'll be using this a lot.

Create home cooked meals on your schedule with the Crock-Pot SCRS507 5-Quart Round Countdown Slow Cooker. Features 5-quart removable stoneware and programmable time and temperature settings to fit your cooking needs.

  • 5-quart removable stoneware crock provides ample room and is easy to clean
  • Cooking time is programmable from 30 minutes to 20 hours
  • Automatically shifts to warm setting once the food is done
  • Easy-to-use touch pad lets you select cook time and temperature
  • See through lid allows you to check cooking progress without letting heat out

I use mine almost daily, worth every penny
I purchased this Crock Pot because my oval one wasn't cooking things properly (it didn't cook evenly especially meats). I use my pot almost daily. It cooks well and evenly. I highly recommend this model along with the Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cook Book, which explains how slow cooking works, which foods work best, and how to season when cooking in a slow cooker. I had no idea you could make desserts in a slow cooker until I read it! I plan to buy them together for a friend for her wedding present.
Used it for 5+ years. works well!
I have used the crock pot for years for many different types of meals from pulled pork to Thai food to keeping mashed potatoes warm for Thanks Giving dinner. Love it!

The only issues I have ever had are:
1. sometimes hard to clean. I find cooking with a lemon helps clean up but still can take a bit of scrubbing and the white outside shows all the splats and splatters.

2. the control panel cover came unglued. It's been working on coming undone for about year. It came off completely when I was starting to cook pulled pork for our 4th of July block party. I taped it back on but that's not going to last and given that it's starting to look a bit ratty, I'm ready for a new pot.

Our school has teacher luncheons every week and I don't drive. I love that I can load up the crock pot in the bike trailer, take it to school, plug it in and take it away, sans food, at the end of the day.

I always forget about the lid clips for transporting,...

Smelly crockpot, not happy with new lid!
I have loved using my Crock Pots over the years, but am not happy with the new gasketed lid they've put on this particular unit. I love, love, love the design of this unit, and it looks absolutely fabulous on my countertop, but the smell when I first cooked in it was borderline unbearable. I thought it was simply because the heating element was new and needed to be used a couple of times, but the stench continued long after the heating element should have been broken in. Then I realized it was the actual rubber gasket on this new gasketed lid with this unit. It is holding every single smell from the first time I cooked in it, and distributing it not only back into the air, but into the food as well. It is for that reason, and that reason alone, that I cannot personally recommend this particular unit. I even called the customer service line to see if I could switch out the gasketed lid for a plain old glass one, and they said I could not, that this crock was molded specific for...

  • 6-quart oval stoneware is perfect for seven or more people or a six pound roast
  • High, low and warm settings are perfect for making chilis, stews, sauces and more
  • Manual cooking control with display timer counts up the cooking time to easily track cook times
  • Dishwasher safe stoneware and lid; convenient cord storage
  • Measures approximately 20 by 12 by 16 inches

Simply Elegant
Being late to the crock pot party, I finally bought one. This model, the SCCPTM600S (manual), is almost identical to its sister, the SCCPTP600P (programmable). I chose this one because the manual operation appealed to me. But the term "manual" is too utilitarian for this Crock Pot, which is simply elegant in design. The power knob has a nice clunky, substantial, feel when you turn it from the OFF position to either LOW, HIGH or WARM. When you turn it on, the digital counter automatically starts, so with a glance you always know how many hours and minutes the crock has been cooking. From the photo, because the crock is black, the lid looks black, but that is just a reflection; the lid is see-through glass so you can watch what's going on inside. The base in heavy and doesn't slide around, and the crock is easily lifted-out to serve or clean. Also nice is the retractable cord, which you can leave plugged-in since the Crock Pot has an OFF switch. This is a very beautiful device,...
Love this crock.
It heats up evenly and its large oval shape makes it perfect for roasters. I do shredded pork sandwiches by pouring root beer over a roast, draining it, then adding BBQ sauce and shredding. Yummy. The rubber piece around the lid holds in all the flavor and the timer lets me cook as long as I want. I'm never at the mercy of some non-cook's merciless programming. Only caution is that you need to learn how to clean the black pot. It will develop a white coating. This is easy fixed with white vinegar, but it takes a little diligence to make sure that t is always clean. I looked all over for the right pot for me, and this was it. If your needs are the same - go for it.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Awesome cooker and warmer
We bought this cooker for a Christmas party. It is awesome. We used it to cook a couple of things and to warm the food items for the party. We ended up using it several more times and continue to look for ways to use it. I recommend it for anyone who like to entertain or has a large family.

3, 2-1/2-quart each. Each individual cooker includes round, removable stoneware. Three individual temperature controls w/low, high, and warm settings. Glass lids. Sleek, integrated handles. Stainless steel/black hybrid finish. Great for entertaining at dinner parties, family gathering, sporting and company events. Offers a complete meal solution with the ability to cook a main dish and side item all in one. Eliminates the need for multiple pots and pans when preparing appetizers, main dishes and desserts. Bonus: includes 2 serving spoons and individual spoon notches! Great a+ candidate - combine with trio.

  • Triple slow-cooker server for entertaining large groups in style
  • 3 stoneware removable cooking pots, each with 2-1/2-quart capacity
  • Separate control knobs; low, high, and warm temperature settings
  • Includes 3 serving spoons and matching glass lids with stay-cool knobs
  • Measures approximately 9-8/9 by 35-1/2 by 13-4/5 inches

Built Tough
I really love this Crock-Pot warmerserver. I bought this for Thanksgiving preparations, and I think it's a really great product. It's built much tougher than some of the servers in the similar price range. It has three ceramic, 2 and 1/2 quart pots that remove easily for clean-up in the sink or washer. Plus it has separate tempature controls for each serving pot! The base is built much sturdier than most, and should last a lifetime. Ir also has really nice, glass lids for each warming pot. I am so happy with this purchase, I wish I would have bought one or two extras for relatives.
The Crockpot Trio is a Must Have!
Finally a Thanksgiving meal that is hot when served! I love the individual heat setting for each crock pot. I used a crockpot liner and there was no clean up. Perfect and I recommend it to all my friends.

Crock Tongs

How To Use a Crock-Pot

useful !!!
I bought these for a friend, who saw them used in my home. The tongs work well in the crock pot....but I use them a lot for securing corn on the cob from a hot pot on the stove. and......when I cook up some bones for our DOGter, they grab the bones hot out of the water. So much better and secure than straight tongs for reaching into a hot pot.
The service from the vender was quick. I am happy with this product!!!!

These useful tongs are designed to make it easy to transfer a roast from the slow cooker to a cutting board or serving platter. The design also allows you to pinch smaller items, such as vegetables or potatoes, for easy transfer in and out of the slow cooker. Heat resistant up to 400 degrees F. Dishwasher safe. Not intended for microwave use.

  • Designed to work with your slow cooker to make it easy and fun to prepare home-cooked meals
  • Round profile cradles roasts
  • Features grooved "teeth" to help grip meats or pinch small veggies
  • Dishwasher safe; not intended for microwave use

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Great
What can I say, I'm all for easy things! I am all about making things in the Crockpot because I can throw it in and forget about cooking all together since it gets done for me automatically! I was very impressed when I found out that I could get my favorite football team, the Greenbay Packers, on a Crockpot. Having the Packers' logo and name across a Crockpot when you're from Wisconsin is amazing, especially if you get to use it when they are playing or during a Super Bowl party even though they were not part of the Super Bowl this year.

I was happy with the quality of the Crockpot itself. It washed up nicely, the crock and cover are able to go into the dishwasher, and the decal of the Greenbay Packers logo is amazing! The only thing that I did not like was it had a dial on the front instead of being digital and the dial did not line up with the correct temperatures. When I first used it, I tried to put my dinner on high around noon hoping that dinner would be done...

How To Use a Crock-Pot

DANGER DO NOT PURCHASE!!
I hesitate to give this a one star rating, but there is no zero. This item is nice looking, but beyond that it is extremely unsafe. Ok, it's downright dangerous! Right after I got it, I noticed that the sides got so hot that you could actually burn yourself by just bumping into it. I actually had to use pot holders just to move it. It boils liquids even on low or warm settings. After that, it began to leak all over the counter even when using slow cooker bags. That was when I noticed that it had been getting so hot that it actually cracked the ceramic pot insert causing the leaks. Do not waste your money with this cheap product. It does not last long enough for you to get your hard earned 25 dollars out of it.

Manual Slow Cooker: Serve six people in effortless style with the modern design and manual functions of this Crock-Pot slow cooker. The SCV700-B is ideal for all your favorite slow cooker recipes, with high, low and warm settings to accommodate varied cooking needs and time constraints. Clean up is also a snap, with removable stoneware that doubles as a serving dish complete with a dishwasher-safe glass lid.

  • 7 quart capacity; serves 9 or more people; holds a 7lb. roast

Scratches and Hard to Clean
This crock pot was purchased as a replacement. My previous crock pot also had a removeable ceramic pot, but the whole bottom cracked and broke off, with a double batch of chili inside. My husband ran to the store and bought the first one he saw, which was this one. It looked fabulous. We hurriedly threw together another batch of chili in this one, and low and behold it looks like it is going to do the same thing. It has a ring around where the liquid level was. After only one use the ceramic has a light grey colored ring the whole way around at where the liquid level was. It looks dirty, but it isn't. I use my crock pot mostly for group gatherings, and having it look bad after one use is disappointing to say the least.
Not bad for the price
I recently picked up one of these inexpensive seven quart slow cookers at the local big box store. I already have a slow cooker, but it is one of the smaller sized one - 2~2 1/5 quarts.

A few weeks ago, I bought the Campbell's Slow Cooker Sauces 6 Flavor Variety Pack here at Amazon. Before purchasing it, I had asked if these sauce packs could be used in a small slow cooker and was told - Yes, just a long as you could get 2 Lbs of meat into it. Looking at my slow cooker I could imagine getting that much hamburger into it with room to spare. But then I got the sauce packs and reading the instructions they recommend at least a six-quart slow cooker (doh!).

Now I've been thinking of buying a new / larger slow cooker for awhile now - but I just been waiting till I did some research and found a good deal on one. Wanting to try a couple of these new sauces, I went shopping at a few of the nearby...

Crock pot -- updated version of the late 60's cooker
The subject says it all. It is an updated version of the late 60's Crock Pot. It is simplicity itself to use, but it doesn't quite fit the anodized aluminum "Bread and Cake Bake" insert which is all that remains from my original crock pot. I have an old domed glass lid from my old crock pot that I had the foresight not to discard when the old crock pot's line cord rotted off. With it, I can use the insert.

As far as the mechanics of shipping it here, it was delivered in the advertised time, as exactly was as advertised. I just wish they had said it doesn't fit the insert. Nevertheless, I'm pretty happy with it.

4 QT, Vegetable Pattern, Slow Cooker, Sturdier Lid & Side Handles For Improved Grip, Removable Stoneware, Tempered Glass Lid, 3 Heat Settings, Including Warm, Ergonomically Designed Control Knob.Slow cookers are usually thought of for chili, soup, or pot roast. But the 200-page bonus cookbook that comes with Rival's 4-quart Crock Pot stoneware slow cooker branches out, with recipes like Roast Chicken with Peas, Prosciutto and Cream, San Francisco Cioppino, and Lamb Korma. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this crockpot!
I bought this crockpot used so I didn't get the booklet, but there are now so many recipes online I'm not hurting for ideas of what to do with it ( [...]is a great site - you can get "slow cooker" recipes by entering it into the search field. They will also send you new recipes weekly if you wish.)

The main thing I love about this crockpot (besides it's really cute decorative design) is, the interior of the crockery is coated with something that virtually "melts" hardened and burned-on residue with a quick soak in soapy hot water. With the crockery in my old pot, you'd have to soak overnight and apply much 'elbow grease' to get it clean. The crock of this Rival is effortless in comparison. It advertises this easy-off feature, and they're NOT kidding!

I agree about the price. Unless you want a different shape or size, I see no reason to go any higher. And the shipping price around $11-12 is reasonably in-line with others that weigh the same but cost more. So...

How To Use a Crock-Pot BBQ Pit Deluxe Slow Cooker

Crock-Pot BBQ Pit Deluxe Slow Cooker

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Indoor BBQ pit makes succulent BBQ a year-round reality!
I got the Rival CrockPot BBQ Pit for my birthday in mid-December and I've used it several times since then, for chicken, ribs, and a decent-sized brisket.

First things first - read the instructions, which are brief and easy to understand, before using the BBQ Pit. One drawback to the instructions is that they just say the stoneware insert's easy to clean. Baked-on meat drippings, however, require significant effort to remove, and I advise you to spray the insert with a Pam-like product before each time you cook.

The BBQ Pit comes with a convenient reversable rack that can accomodate either ribs or a roast or chicken. I had a large brisket that I sort of had to shoehorn in, but after a few hours it had shrunk so that I could move it around easily. It's important to avoid letting the meat come in contact with the inside of the stoneware insert, because it might burn.

The BBQ Pit cooks meat at a low temperature, perfect for ribs or brisket which tend...

OK , But I Prefer My Smoker
Just as I was about to get rid of this thing I took a few minutes and read what others on Amazon had to say about this item, decided to try some of the suggestions, and went and gave it a second chance.

Lining the bottom with aluminum and putting a sheet of aluminum over the cooking area before closing the lid made all the difference (as did leaving it alone and not lifting the lid for the first several hours, and only lifting a total of one time to baste) for both cooking the meat and cleaning the unit. I also only added a little bit of beer and water to the drip pan before cooking. This seemed to help keep the meat tender (without oversteaming it) and even helped brown it a bit.

Still, there are some lingering problems. I don't know why RIVAL did not put a "warm" setting on the switch like they do with the crock-pot, which we use all the time. Also, that meat rack is dysfunctional. If you try and put the ribs or chicken pieces in the "rack rows" created...
Crock-Pot Pit BBQ
After reading reviews on this item on other sites, I decided that I wanted one.

I tried it with a whole chicken so far and it was "fall off the bone good". My next test will be ribs. Can't wait.

The only complaint I had was, that when I recieved it. It didn't come with any instruction manual. I assume it was just missed. But I came to Amazon.com and was able to print one out.

Big, beautiful, and cooks to perfection.
This is a 5 star item.
I've never owned a slow cooker and was a bit concerned after reading that Rival slow cookers received significantly lower ratings than other brands of slow cookers. This one works like a charm. I was also concerned because I read that older models of slow cookers cooked more slowly on low, and that some newer slow cookers cooked at a heat that was too high.

Not to worry. On low, it's exactly that. Perfect and slow and will cook roasts to perfection in 8-10 hours. On high, it works perfectly too. It's a lovely looking black ceramic stoneware insert too. I'm on my way to being a crock pot fanatic. I am a brand new fan.

For today's busy families, the Crock-Pot Slow Cooker is an essential piece of cookery. Start your meal before leaving for work or school and it's ready by the time you return home! This Rival 6.5-qt. slow cooker is roomy enough to hold an entire chicken or roast and vegetables, too. It features three heat settings and a keep-warm setting, an auto-protect safety system, and a rinse-clean, stick resistant coating in the removable stoneware pot. The glass lid lets you view contents as it cooks, so you retain moisture without the need to lift the lid. Attractive chrome exterior with improved grip and comfort side handles. What is the world coming to...???
Why do manufacturers always have to change a good thing?

I had a Rival crockpot for over 12 years. It always worked great. The idea behind a crockpot is to cood slow and low. My old Rival cooked at 150 degrees on the "Low" setting.

I use the old Rival all the time, and decided to get a second one so I could use them both simutaneouly and cook two recipes at the same time. I looked at the reviews for the electronic Rival models. Everyone said they cooked too hot. So I finally purchased this 6.5 quart model with the simple knob control.

Well, I filled the crockpot full of 8 lb.s of chicken. The next morning, I could smell the burning food. I looked in the pot, and the chicken was boiling on the "Low" setting.

So, the next night I filled it full of a vegetable soup recipe. The next morning, the soup was boiling over ... again on the "Low" setting. The veggies were overcooked and mushy. I measured the temperature and it was 195...
Fantastic Kitchen Aide
I love this Slow Cooker. My friend recommended it to me about three years ago but the only thing I cooked in it was whole chickens. Then I moved to SD and my mother-in-law showed me how to use it for EVERYTHING. Now I cook roasts, steaks, sooups, and even spaghetti in this thing. It's a time saver! And so easy to clean up.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

The warm function on this crock pot does NOT work.
I purchased one of these crock pots because of it's programmable features and reasonable price. WHAT A MISTAKE. After a programmed setting the unit does go to the warm setting and the warm amber indicator lights up - HOWEVER - if you you manually put this crock pot on warm by pressing the "cook time" button - it gets real hot. I tested it with an oven thermometer to verify my suspicion and sure enough - when this crock pot is MANUALLY set to warm it goes to over 300 degrees (high).

I took it back for a replacement but the 2nd one did the same thing.

I contacted customer service (email only) and they gave me the royal run around with canned answers and proceeded to inform me after several emails, that I tested the temperature in an improper manner...

I returned the 2nd one also.

DO NOT BUY THIS CROCKPOT unless you want over cooked and/or burned food when MANUALLY using the "warm" setting. I'd have given this a zero star if that were...

Horrible product quality
We have always owned Rival crock pots in the past, but somebody else must be making this brand 'Crock Pot' now, because the entire experience is different. Don't get me wrong, the unit looks very nice, and if High meant high temperature and Low meant low temperature, this unit would be a perfect fit in many kitchens. However, low means 212 degrees on this unit, which will scald your soups and burn your slow cooked roast recipe. Warm is the only usable 'slow cook' setting on the entire unit, and even that is over 180 degrees (and is the setting that doesn't have a timer on it). If you are looking for a timed 'set and forget' unit, skip this one. You'll come home to overcooked or burnt meals.
Crock Pot Delivers
I ordered this as a gift for my oldest son. He has used it many times since receipt and loves it. Easily programmed, cleans easily and preforms as specified. No problems. He now has a hot dinner every night when he gets home. Important for a single guy that works hard every day.
The unit cleans easily and is dishwasher safe. Big bonuses.
Cooking temps are good and consistent and no worries about food being undercooked or burned.

The main reason I bought it was it's similarity to a unit I already own. It's just round instead of oval shaped.

Slow cooker that really does cook slow!
I've used this Crock-Pot several times in the few weeks that I've owned it, and I can say that I am truly more than pleased with this purchase! My previous slow cooker was a Rival Brand crockpot which tended to boil my food on low. I never felt comfortable leaving my old slow cooker on while I was at work for 9+ hours each day. For any recipe that called for 8 hours of low cooking time, the meal would be ready within 3-4 hours and would start to scortch the sides shortly after!

When I started my search for a new crockpot, I considered all options, including high end ranges like All Clad and Breville. I'm MORE than thrilled that I went the route of this Crock-Pot. Yes, it isn't as "programmable" as some (it's options for cooking are ONLY low: 8 or 10 hours and high: 4 or 6 hours - it also has a WARM setting).

For my very first use, I decided that I would try it on a Saturday, when I could monitor how the slow cooker actually cooked the food. I didn't really...

Great basic crock pot
We bought this crock pot as a replacement for our old one.

I was slightly hesitant to buy one after reading so many negative reviews from others.

I removed the crock from the box, washed the stone pot with soap and warm water, and tossed in the ingredients for a white chili. 6 hours later it was perfect. The temperature settings on this one are much better than our old one. On our old one "low" meant "slightly rolling boil after 3 hours" and "high" meant "tastes like burning" (Thanks Ralph Wiggums!) if you didn't watch the pot.

This one is great, "low" is really "low" and "high" is not going to ruin the meal. Plus, it will switch to "keep warm" automatically so it doesn't overcook something.

There were no unusual smells from the unit (other than typical "first time use" smells from an appliance) and the gasket worked just fine.

We cook 1-2 meals a week in cold weather with our crock, so its getting a workout.

We...
Melted!
We love our Crock-Pot, but this specific version melted. The plastic base got so hot that it melted directly into the ceramic insert. We are extremely lucky there wasn't a fire. After calling Crock-Pot they agreed to exchange it for another slow cooker. Unfortunately we were sent the exact same Crock-Pot which I'm not too thrilled about using unless I'm at home. This completely defeats the purpose of using a slow cooker. I'm thinking about throwing it away and starting over with another brand that won't be a fire hazard.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Programmable feature is limited
This is my first slow cooker, so I can't compare it to others on the market but can at least provide some feedback about the product. I wanted a programmable slow cooker so that it would automatically shut off once the meal was done cooking. With this cooker, you can only set it to cook on high for 4 or 6 hours, or on low for 8 or 10 hours. These are the only options. If I wanted to cook something on low for 6 hours, I wouldn't be able to. Well, I could set it to cook for 8 hours and then make sure I'm home to monitor it, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of a programmable slow cooker? Also, I've had to stop cooking meals an hour or so in advance because it would have overcooked - perhaps this cooker runs a little warmer than most? I've read other reviews about Rival slow cookers and this seems to be pretty common.

With the Rival SCCPVP553-B 6-Quart Slow Cooker Crock Pot, those slow simmering meals will be worth the wait! The idea behind the slow cooker is a sound one. That long, slow simmering tenderizes tough cuts of roasts and chicken, and brings a fullness of flavor to home made soups. It's also ideal for cooking dried beans and legumes, which require hours of slow simmering to soften. Stews and soups aren't all that Crock Pots can do, you can cook everything from casseroles to rice & pasta dishes, steamed puddings and even breads. Fifteen minutes of prep time in the morning means that a steaming hot dinner greets your family at the door after a long day at school and work. For a family watching pennies, a Crock Pot cooking continues to be an easy...

Great!
I purchased this crock-pot after using an old 3.5 quart without a removable insert. I have to say it's a little large for most of the recipes I was use to using, and I have read that you should fill any crock-pot at least half full, so I find myself trying to add more ingredients to meet the half way mark. I like the shape alot, but would of preferred a plastic lid. This one is glass and I have to be careful not to hit or bump it into things (I'm not the gentlest of people with my dishes). I'm also disappointed that although it is "programmable", only two options are available for high and low. For example, you only have 8 hours or 10 hours to choose from on the low setting. I wanted to set a particular recipe for 7 hours, but there is no way to do that, so I chose 8 and had to be home to turn it manually on to the warm setting. There goes the excitement of the programmability that I thought would be so convenient!
unsafe lid
I bought this to have a larger size cooker as well as my smaller one. The very first time I used the cooker, the handle on the lid literally fell off when I lifted the lid. The lid was close to the table or would have fallen to the floor. Upon checking, it looked like the black plastic part of the handle that attached to the screw had melted. I had checked the temperature of the cooker (it was on low)previous to this and it was around 195 degrees-so it was not too hot. This is dangerous and should be reported.

I did call Rival at the number listed in the product manual and asked for a replacement lid. They said they would send me another cooker in 5-10 days. I will update the review at that time to see if they come through with their promise. They said they had had other calls about the lid problem....

UPDATE: I am pleased to say that Rival did indeed send me another crockpot, a different programmable model of the same size and actually slightly more...

How To Use a Crock-Pot SCCPVG000 18-Ounce Electric Gravy Warmer, White

Crock-Pot SCCPVG000 18-Ounce Electric Gravy Warmer, White

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Doesn't work as intended. Sorry, but don't buy it.
For the first time since the brand CROCK POT was invented, I am disappointed with one of their products - this item.

It doesn't keep the gravy warm. AT ALL. I used a thermometer and the hottest I could get this to was 130 degrees.

When I emailed Rival, they said it is supposed to be at 160 degrees.
I wrote them back, saying it only works at 130 degrees, and they never
responded.

This is what I did to try to get it to work: I filled the boat with boiling hot water, let that sit awhile, dumped that out, then put boiling hot gravy in the boat. It cooled off in no time.

VERY disappointed - before I purchased this tiem, I LOVED the idea - I thought it was PERFECT. I bought THREE of them. Bad idea.

Sorry, I want to write good reviews only but I don't want anyone else to get ripped off like I did.

The Crockpot Electric Gravy Warmer is a must have for entertaining. Simply fill the 18-ounce removable gravy crock with your pre-heated gravy or sauces. 18-ounce crock holds up to 2-1/4-cups of liquid. Just plug in and the heating base will keep your gravy or sauces at the ideal temperature for entertaining. Removable gravy crock comes out of the heating base for easy pouring and serving. Detachable cord allows you to go easily from counter to tabletop for further convenience. Dishwasher-safe stoneware and lid make clean up a snap.

  • 18-ounce capacity holds up to 2-1/4-cups of liquid
  • Electric heating base keeps your gravy and sauces at the ideal temperature while entertaining
  • Removable gravy crock for easy pouring and serving
  • Detachable cord for further tabletop convenience
  • Removable gravy crock is dishwasher-safe
  • 18 ounce capacity holds up to 2 and 1/4 cups of liquid
  • Detachable cord for further table-top convenience
  • Removable gravy crock is dishwasher safe

I don't see the point.
It's a waste of electric and money as far as I'm concerned. Since you need to microwave or heat the gravy before placing it in the warmer , why not just microwave or make it before bringing it to the table. In addition the lid is not flush with the boat allowing heat to escape when it's in use as a warmer. Interesting idea ,poorly executed.
Gravy Warmer
PROS: It keeps your gravy warm, but not too hot. It's very convenient. It eliminates that frustration of finding your meal is done but that you've forgotten to warm the gravy. Or that it's grown cold. Also keeps your stove clean since gravy tends to pop all over the place if it isn't stirred constantly.

CONS: It's a bit heavy and awkward to hold. Two of my fingers fit through the handle. The weight of it ensures that you'll have to use two hands to pour. My husband had issues with the lid and dropped it into the gravy twice. When I used it, I didn't have a problem. While I know this will come in handy at Thanksgiving and Christmas, it's not the sort of thing I see us using every day.

3.5 - 4 STARS: Though lovely and convenient, I'm not sure how much use it will receive.

Great Concept - Needs Improvements
This is very cool design. I love the concept of connectable crock pots, particularly for parties or holiday dinners. Unfortunately, the negatives on this product outweigh the positives for me.

Pros:

1. You can have multiple dishes cooking and/or keeping warm while only needing one outlet.
2. Nice design and easy to clean.

Cons:

1. The cord is supposed to be retractable, but mine doesn't work. I have to force the cord back into the opening, and it doesn't pull back out smoothly.
2. The entire unit gets extremely hot. The base is roughly 10 inches by 12 inches around, and the crock pot sits in the middle. The base gets very hot all over. I sit it on my stovetop, and the base throws so much heat that my stovetop is hot enough to cook on. I would not place this on a table without a potholder or pad underneath the protect the wood. It might not even be safe for some kitchen counters.
3. Because the base gets so hot, I don't think...

Put On The Meatballs!
Entertaining? This is the cats meow!

You can do slow cooking as well as serving in this. A meal for two, slow cooking two separate dishes at the same time then having the ability to self serve and keep the food warm during the meal. Serving during a get-together, like cocktail wieners in BBQ sauce, and at the same time having a warm con queso or cheese sauce for tortilla chips. Or how about a dinner, using this unit for side dishes and attaching the three and a half qt. unit for the main dish----the possibilities seem endless. There are several different size units available; this unit, two one qt., a three and a half qt., and a two qt.. They all attach together, up to six units, with only one cord to plug in, that saves on table or serving area clutter...I suppose that would be terrific for serving a rather large buffet dinner party. My wife and I are getting on in years and just don't eat like we did in the past...this two unit is just perfect for us. The unit is...
Perfect size for my family of three
Although this crockpot is a little on the small side, I found it to be the PERFECT size for my family of three. Our larger one is too big, causing food to overcook because of all the steam created and the smaller one is more suitable for fondue. This made a nice almost 3 lb roast with carrots and onions. Although I felt it cooked slower that my other ones, that can work out very well if I'm out for the day and don't want foods to overcook (like my older crock pot). The design is beautiful, I love the square even though I do not plan to buy other connectable units.

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Great crockpot, crappy lid!
I love this crockpot. I now have, however, a lid without a handle. The plastic handle is just a bad design, period. Its not snug enough that funk won't get underneath it if you soak it, so it traps gunk in there. There is no way to tighten it when it starts to loosen. Eventually mine came off in my hand. I will still use the lid with a pliers because I like the crockpot itself. Whatever happened to the design where the lid and the handle were all one piece of glass? Bring that back!

Great crockpot
I had one of the newer Smartpot crock pots and found that it got way too hot. I then purchased this one and is much more consistent and works very well.
Definitely cooks too hot on low
I have owned a LOT of crockpots. In fact, as we speak I not only have this one, but also a 1 quart, 3 quart, 7 quart and 18 quart. I liked the pretty looks of this one, but I agree with the other reviewers that said it cooks too hot on the low temperature. You MUST have your crockpot about 3/4 full or so to avoid it. High liquid recipes like broth based soups are ok, but thicker food like stew, chili, etc. are inclined to burn if left for a long time.

The gasket also helps maintain the moisture level in the pot, since even without the latches (which aren't used while cooking), the lid seats better than the lids on many slow cookers. I didn't test the security of the seal by transporting the Crock Pot in the car, as you would for a potluck, but there's no doubt it will avoid spills better than one without the latching feature. I think the bonus Little Dipper pot will be handy, as well.

Two things bothered me, though. The first is very trivial: There is no indicator light to show that the pot is turned on. Of course, you can see whether the dial is set to cook, but a light is handy and reassuring. More than once while I was trying out the pot, I glanced across the kitchen and thought "Oh no, I forgot to turn it on." Not a deal breaker, but a nice little...

The Crock-Pot Cook and Carry Slow Cooker keeps up with your busy, on-the-go lifestyle. Turn the dial to "High" and get a hot meal, snack, appetizer or dip in no time. Set it on "Low" and tonight’s dinner can cook while you’re at work. Or use the "Warm" setting during a get together with friends so your dish stays ready to eat until the party is over. The secure-fitting lid and locking system create a tight seal between the stoneware and lid to ensure that up to 6-quarts of your secret recipe can go where you go with no hassle and no mess. Your car interior remains clean on the ride to your best friend’s house, company picnic or family reunion. Also included is a 16 ounce Little Dipper Warmer, perfect for dips and sauces.

  • The Crock-Pot Cook and Carry Slow cooker is just as at home in the kitchen as it is on the road
  • The convenient lid locks nestle neatly in with the lid so your counter top looks sleek and clean
  • The stoneware transfers easily from the stainless steel frame to the table or refrigerator
  • Both the stoneware and the glass lid are dishwasher-safe, making clean up simple
  • Crock-Pot Slow Cookers make cooking easy, but the Crock-Pot Cook and Carry Slow Cooker makes it easy to get your dish from here to there

Some nice features, but also some drawbacks
There are lots of things to like about this Crock Pot. The larger size is really helpful when it comes to slow-cooking a roast or a chicken. The the side latches come in very handy for moving the Crock Pot from one point to another. The Little Dipper works very well; I have made a number of very nice hot dips without any problems.

HOWEVER --- some of the criticisms of other reviewers are spot-on. This thing does run hot, and if I am preparing a dish which requires 8-10 hours of slow-cooking, I return to my older, smaller (but more reliable) Crock Pot. This thing cooks way too quickly, and if you left a cut of meat in this for 8 hours at the temperatures it tends to run, it would obliterate the meat. I use this newer Crock Pot only on weekends when I can monitor things, and every time I have used it, I have had to cut short the cooking time by two or more hours. This is not a good thing if you are depending on this to have dinner ready on a week day after work...
GREAT DESIGN, I ALSO LIKED THE LITTLE DIPPER
As one who has been using a crock pot over the years, what caught my eye on this one was its low oval shape. I like the fact that it's lower and wider than my old crock pot (the old one was higher, not as wide and was shaped round). I feel that the design on this new product is safer, the pot is easier to carry since it's oval and I particularly like that you can actually lock in the glass cover as there two locks that snap in (one on each side); this feature comes in really handy especially if you have to transport the crock pot in your car and are concerned with spilling any food, and the fact that it's lower, there's less of a chance of the crock pot flipping over. Also, I want to add that the crock pot feels pretty sturdy when I pick it up.

I also really liked the the "Little Dipper". I tried it with a couple of different dips and it worked really great for keeping the dips hot; my only problem with it is that the inside liner does not come out for easy cleaning where...

How To Use a Crock-Pot

Updated review...now I've tried out 3 of these pots!
UPDATE: I think a wire may have come loose in my first pot. I have now used my replacement pot for 6 hours and it worked great...I've used it often--and the pot I gave as a gift is working great. So, in spite of the fact I had a glitch in the first pot I bought, all is working great now and I love this pot...so with Amazon's free exchange for a new pot, and new pots working perfectly, I have raised my review rating. I am glad I didn't give up on it...

MY ORIGINAL REVIEW:
The concept behind this is wonderful; each side holds 16 oz of dip. That's a decent sized jar if you buy a dip or 2 cups worth if you make your own on each side, it takes up little counter space and you can do 2 dips at a time for your quests in one small pot. I did a spinach artichoke dip and a jalapeno bean dip and it kept everything hot for almost 4 hours. I was in love.

Here's the thing...the instructions suggested to only warm dips for 4 hours--it failed, however, to say why. I figured...

Very handy item
I got this to use for Christmas dinner and it's great!! Just the right size for dips and can be used for one or two different dips. Keeps the dip just the right temperature. I'm very pleased.
Best that I've found for dips
I looked around quite a bit before deciding to buy this for my brother's birthday present. I also bought a dip cookbook. This has worked out very well, the product is great!

Best Crock Pot
I have this Crock Pot but my crock insert is white instead of black. I bought this slow cooker probably in the late 1990s. I own three slow cookers (the Rival 3-1/2-quart oval and the Rival 6-quart), and this is the best one and the one I use the most. It is 2-1/2 quarts and is perfect for two people. It cooks the best out of all three of my slow cookers as it does not overcook the food as the other two will. I find that the cooking times listed in most slow cooker cookbooks are very accurate for this Crock Pot, but for my other two larger models, I must reduce the cooking time. I have never had overcooked food in this slow cooker. Everything has always cooked to perfection. Most recipes in slow cooker cookbooks are written for 6 to 8 servings. If I cut the recipes in half, they will fit perfectly in this Crock Pot and fill it 3/4 full. That is just enough food for my husband and me and will usually leave leftovers for one or two more meals for one person. This slow cooker also looks...

TASTY FOOD GREAT CROCKPOT
Just bought this crockpot this weekend or actually on Black Friday 2003, it was inexpensive and it is a great way for me to learn how to cook for one instead of making large meals and having to freeze a ton of food.

A great crock pot if you are cramped on space i.e. apartment, studio, small townhouse, cape cod living. Doesn't take up much room and can fit a decent size portions of food in the crock pot.

Makes flavorful food...delicious....the toughest of cuts turn out perfection!
Cut cooking times on recommended recipes in half.
I purchased this small, 2.5 quart crock pot for my college apartment, and am storing a larger one at my parents' house. The larger crock pot of the same brand is extremely useful and has never given me any trouble.

However, this smaller crock pot heats up very quickly, and will usually cook food in half the time the larger crockpot will. Of course this makes sense due to the decreased surface area of ceramic to heat, but I hadn't thought of that, and I wish I had known this before I purchased this product.

When I checked on my first overnight oatmeal in this pot after four hours of cooking (recommended cooking time: 8 hours), all of the liquid was gone. In another hour or two, it would have been burnt. Fortunately, adding more water did the trick and it was able to cook the oatmeal without further incident.

Basically, because of how quickly this pot heats up this is a good product only if you can check on it every three or four hours or so while...

How To Use a Crock-Pot

A great budget slowcooker!
I've had this Crockpot for about 3 weeks and all my dishes are coming out great. My lid is made of glass, so I'm not sure which model the other user got that has a plastic lid. Also, my lid doesn't rattle, either. In fact, it's nice and sturdy and easy to clean and use. If you can only afford a basic slowcooker (like me), this is a great choice. I really love it and have been having a great time using it.

Simply perfect. Simply delicious. Crock-Pot Slow Cookers make mealtime and entertaining more flavorful. Turn the dial to “High” and get a hot meal, snack, appetizer or dip in no time. Set it on “Low” and tonight’s dinner can cook while you’re at work. Or use the “Warm” setting during a get together with friends so your dish stays ready to eat until the party is over. No matter the recipe or the occasion, your Crock-Pot Slow Cooker keeps the temperature steady so your food is cooked to perfection, full of flavor and delicious. To keep clean up easy, the 5-quart removable round stoneware slides right out of the base for easy transport to the table or storage in the fridge. And both the stoneware and lid are dishwasher-safe. WORKS GREAT!
I got mine for Christmas from my daughter and it works terrific! I've been using it a lot and NEVER have any problems with it. No burnt food, easy to clean, no rattling lid! I love it. Can't understand why others have problems with it. I've had none at all and have been using it since Christmas.
"Crock-pot" is terrible...
I bought this on the strength of an old crock-pot I had. This old crock-pot was still functioning when I got rid of it - I wanted something that was much easier to clean. So I bought this.

This is one of the worst purchases I've ever made. It cooks half-way decently, but the lid is made of lightweight plastic that allows steam to escape. This steam collects and eventually spills onto the counter - regardless of how much liquid is actually in the Crock-pot. Some of this liquid seeps into the area between the stoneware and the heating element, leaving massive stains on the heating element that can be easy or hard to remove depending on what you're cooking.

If you contact them about this problem, you're told that this is a design "feature". Supposedly without this, pressure could build up and cause some sort of problem if water doesn't leak all over your counter. Nevermind that other brands don't have this "feature" and that the old Crock-pots had glass lids that...
